And I think I always wanted to make people like myself feel valuable. So I wasnt quite sure if I would be added to that list, but it was very exciting that they trusted me enough to do that. GOODMAN: Thank you so much. I always say that I live out loud as Black and queer and non-binary because so many couldnt and they fought for me to be able to. My mother, who has been a source of pain, has also been a source of comfort and inspiration. When it comes to Hollywood, his work is about highlighting stories like his own, which arent seen often. And I think Carl is part of it. Or you see our fashion. Thats always stayed with me. You know, I think the queer community in itself is also still reckoning with the racism and internalized homophobia that happens. My therapist explained it best, which is when you have these moments of trauma and you revisit them to try and get the lesson, theres a retriggering that happens. I have no interest in that. But the community in which all those things come from, which I would say is Black and brown queer folks, aren't protected and aren't valued and aren't validated inside of that. Its a life approach that even inspired Goodman to start a sex-positive Instagram Live show called Messy Mondays in which they encouraged people to talk about the most muddled things in their lives. And then you trick yourself into thinking that they are. He talks about this from time to time online and when he is in . Its just words. And that, I dont think, rings true for a lot of people. She said, oh, well, if I ever see you in a movie, I'm going to point and say, he can't drive. Well, I'm just going to dive right in to the guts of this book because CHANG: You start from a really upfront place. So thats what my commitment is, and I know my communitys commitment is as well. He wants to bring attention to things that many people might not be aware of, or that they might not feel comfortable discussing. And I want to adjust accordingly.. And so for anyone who does the same, theres a reflection of that as opposed to getting into a fight with somebody who just may want the clicks, may not have been doing their mental health work, may be on their own bullshit. It's in its infancy stage, but I'm very honored to be able to offer Black artists more than just a "diversity program" but instead a personal investment in them and their work. Yeah, I think there was this sentiment out there that, Its just jokes, how could it be harmful? I started the mentorship program in 2020 with the help of my bosses, Mark [Levin], Jen [Flackett], Andrew [Goldberg] and Nick [Kroll]. That hasnt happened a lot. In a chapter titled The Man, Goodman writes about how people try to diminish the manhood of people who dont fit into traditional stereotypes: When a gay, trans or Queer person identifies as a man, some people believe that somehow diminishes, tarnishes, or devalues the experience of manhood. During the uproar specifically over the Dave Chappelle special on Netflix, one thing that happened was that Netflix [CEO Ted Sarandos] actually pointed to shows like Big Mouth and Sex Education and said essentially, Look, we also are doing this good thing, seemingly as a way to defend what was happening with Chappelle. How do I perform being a man so that I can fit in and also, like, stay safe? He is set to reprise the role as a lead in the Big Mouth spinoff, Human Resources, for which he also writes, with that series set to debut on Netflix on March 18. I don't know. I hope that we will see less oppression-based narratives and instead allow our Black queer characters to play with, as I say, "all the colors in the crayon box of humanity." That they are beautiful. You said, with white gay boys, there seemed to be an unspoken expectation that I would need to be a certain kind of gay to fit in. But in general, my course of action is to just continue showing up as myself, continue being as visible as possible. Mr. Goodman is also a Black and queer activist who hosts a weekly podcast, Black Folx, which features conversations about diverse Black voices. A force to be reckoned with, he moves through the industry fearlessly, ready to challenge the narrative of what it means to be both Black and queer. And the whole point was, how do we support and amplify up-and-coming Black writers and give them this eight week, one-on-one intensive where they get to audit the room?
