You knew it at five years old. It must have been interesting to watch them evolve from And Then There Were Three to Duke to Abacab and see them embrace New Wave to some degree and change up their sound. Billy Cobham: a very good drummer who shimnes mostly as soloist. You taught for years at the college level. Mike Portnoy, Lars Ulrich: I don`t know nothing about them. We basically tracked it with no bass. [Laughs] They were like, How could you be down here doing this and not our tour? I was like, Im just here a few days. But I was really trying to be mindful of family time. No one also seems to mention how great of a drummer he was (I am not sure if he still is). Not at all. But Phil Collins still did great things with those two albums. Nothing against Phil's son, I'm sure he's good, but why hasn't anyone said anything about Chester? The vibe just changed. The first couple of years, I pretty much put it together. Was he demanding? The band was really good. [Laughs] That was fun. He was a phenomenal player oh, my goodness. Everyone had gotten over themselves by then and it was just really fun from top to bottom. That's All. It turned out he was Ben E. Kings musical director. He told me that I sounded like crap and all that. Wed do eight-hour rehearsals. I don't think he was ever going to be on board with expanding it to additional legs. The first album after Gabriel left was still very progressive sounding, and as the albums after came out, the change could be heard more and more. I actually kind of felt bad for him, he was trying to impart what it takes to be a working drummer (discussing things like getting no sleep with Zappa, his approach to odd times, prepping for touring, being versed in many styles, reading etc..) part of the audience was peppering him with Genesis questions like "what is Phil Collins like?," and the other half just wanted to hear some blazing solo.. odd crowd. No. First, a great interview. We wouldnt just play a song in five. Long story short: Collins turned up in a bad mood for the 2010 "Going Back" tour and griped at Thompson because Thompson hadn't prepared the Motown drum parts in enough detail. And at the end of the show, he just went off. In fact, most of the names of the drummers appear almost always at the end of the credits in the album covers. Did it surprise you that they called you back? That is when we actually had soul music stations. It was a real wake-up call. Thats where you started hearing Motown and stuff. Were drums your first love as an instrument? Who knows what thats going to look like at this point. Its very rewarding and Im involved with an organization here called the Nashville Jazz Workshop. He turned around and stared at me. The guy was brilliant, amazing. Like I said, it was never a band in that sense. And again, if you werent busy enough, you joined the Bee Gees for a tour in 1989. A couple of the Drum Duets were released as singles in several places in South America and some countries in Europe, which is kind of cool. Yeah. I was like, Man, Ive got to have some time with my family. Do you talk to Daryl still? Ive still got pretty mixed feelings about it. Unfortunately, it really took off, so I dont think it worked as a tax write-off. That blew me away. They had promised him membership in the band. Phil helped survive Genesis. The cool thing was my family came out on the road a lot. Apparently he was a close friend of the band because in 1969 Genesis moved to cottage owned by Richard Macphail's parents to concentrate on writing. Among other things, in one interview Bruford said: "In YES, the most important members are the singer, the bassist and guitarists like Rabin and Howe. The difference being I wasnt so much into the English drummers, like Keith Moon, and he was. He asked me if I read [music] and he showed me a chart and asked me if I could learn it by the next day. A great experience to see. Her parents are now in her band. I hadnt done that. -Guitarists/vocalists/bassists/keyboardists "heroes" are the most important members in a band . The new managers were like, Absolutely not. Man, it was fun. Id have to say, I dont think Jaco was too comfortable with that. And then he added the drums and it was like, Forget about it. We were all in the car going to the first show in Japan. Chester Thompson on Decade-Long Rift with Crab Apple Phil Collins. But not only did Thompson stick with Genesis all the way through their Turn It On Again reunion tour of 2007 Collins also brought him over to his solo career in 1981 and used him for nearly all of his tours between 1981 and 2010. As far as teaching, I only took that gig because my son was going to that school. How did he know you? He might have some fives and sevens instead of triplets, things like that. After 1978, this must have felt like a long-term gig. I had no idea. In 2017, Collins revealed that he was a type-2 diabetic, undergoing treatment with a hyperbaric chamber after the condition caused obsesses on his foot which became infected. It was just there. Its an interesting gig musically speaking. At one point, we discussed it and it was like, If we dont really need to be there, you guys are fine to go and do what youre doing. [Laughs]. He didnt know all the tunes, but obviously he was pretty familiar with the whole prog-rock thing. It was the only way to work that stuff. Keith Moon, John Bonham: great drummers, yes, key members, because their band never sounded the same without them, butthey weren`tthe main composers in their bands. [Laughs] Its interesting, I probably absorbed more of their culture than they did anything I grew up with because I was really uncomfortable. Oh, yeah. Thanks for sharing. I was okay one-on-one, but they speak much, much faster than we do. They sent over some cassettes. Ive done some teaching, not a lot, but at the moment I have a handful of private students at a school. He isn't the main cause of downfall for Genesis, so shut up about that. Bill Bruford, Neil Peart, Phil Ehart (even producer), Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, Jeff Porcaro, Carl Palmer, Mike Portnoy, Mick Fleetwood (The band uses his name ), John Bonham, Carmine Appice, Stewart Copeland, Cozzy Powell, Lars Ulrich, Lee Kerslake, Don Henley, Pat Mastelotto, Terry Bozzio, Roger Taylor, Billy Cobham. That wasnt going to work. Still his guitarplay wasvery important to the music even if his composing didnt reach the albums. Again, as humans, we adapt. Does Phil Collins seem a Christmas card kind of guy to you? I was just thinking, What in the heck is going on here?, I imagine one day you guys will speak again. Im still pretty good friends with the only two that are left, Ruth and Anita. But she once gave me a letter that I wrote in fourth grade that pretty much outlined my whole career. And so, we had met and played together on a few occasions. And Caribou Ranch was magical. All three members of the trio Genesis played a part in the decision to simplifiy their sound, with Banks being the most in charge. You can tell he is play acting. That's pretty much the zest of it. Listen Renaissance, Marillion, Pendragon Barclay James Harvest, Moody Blues, Procol Harum, The Strawbs, etc are full of ballads, and nobody ever made a problem. I guess they were never able to release it because Peter is pretty spontaneous and it drove the sound engineer crazy. His marriage was falling apart. I was playing with adults. Did you see any concerts in your younger years? Did you take a crash course in Genesis before you went in? [Weather Report bassist] Alphonso [Johnson] had been a friend for years. Well, its been quiet. So they took some time off. Phil Collins is a top ten drummer, a good backing vocalistr, an average lead singer and a lousy songwritter, that's my opinion. Yes, it`s true, but none of them became the permanent lead singer in their bands like Collins. After I left, Robin got really ticked at me. But at this point Id be curious to see it. How about if I come in and play some percussion along with Alex [Acua]? But it was uncomfortable. That is the reason he left the drums to Chester and Bruford. Not the first day. It was a lot. But he just enjoyed being around us since we were so lively and fun. note: They chose instead to record with drummers Nir Zidkyahu and Nick DVirgilio. Im always very aware of whats going on. The guy had a great feel, but he wasnt a real reader. Ralph Humphrey was very helpful that whole time because I had been getting into odd times, but not at the level Frank was doing it. Im just really enjoying life. Im grateful. Genesis was very balanced. A little bit later he goes, Man, I think I broke my finger. We all went, Come on. But when that whole tour was announced, Phil was very insistent that it was not going to be a big tour. It didnt frustrate me so much that I didnt do it. We didnt do a lot of shows, but at the very last show [at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 1st, 2010], he wasnt the happiest hed ever been. Has Phil talked to you at all in the past 10 years? Much of the show is just you playing drums, but during a lot of the instrumental breaks, Phil would come back and play along with you. But if youre a music-ed student, you need to learn a different instrument group every semester. I think he got a little annoyed since I had done an interview and they asked which I enjoyed [Genesis or Collins solo] more. They were really nice, cool people to work with. Chester Thompson, who spent more than 30 years playing drums live with Genesis, recalled how Phil Collins targeted him every time things went wrong on the frontmans debut solo tour. By the time they reached out to me, they allowed 10 days for rehearsal and it was a two-and-a-halfhour show. Thompson believed he had landed a short-term job when Collins asked him to join Genesis without an audition in 1977, but he went on to take part in every road trip until 2007 and was also a. I was like, Yeah. Some of it was Frank. He was a member from the beginning, when they did there really masterful work, but no one seems to mention that. Ive done a couple of jazz trio albums that I really enjoyed. I saw everybody in those days. He had proven to be really close friends with those guys and I never related culturally, so there was always this gap between us. And Phil and I had a lot of the same roots. I worked with him during a really happy period in his life. It came up again [in 1984] and it was just great. So Phil did pop some good , some average and some contrived but all big selling. Chester's performance and recording experiences have influenced over three decades of music and musicians. They are like 15 feet away and everyone is wearing masks. Oh, goodness. And I think its a fantastic opportunity that his son gets to play with him because his son drummed backstage when he was five. It was really awesome. Basically, I literally transcribed everything Phil played on those early prog-rock albums. His work ethic was just phenomenal. I said, Man, I cant do that. Would have to be an idiot not to agree with this, my problem is not with his drumming, I recently had a discussion with a member who said he was only an average drummer not able to play with Yes. By then, radio was getting pretty segregated. Hes passed away now, but we were in about 10 or 12 bands together growing up. Had they said, Were going to change the feel a bit, I would have been fine with that. Hed then go off to a studio and work on whatever he had in the can. Except the horrible version of Your Own Special Way (Already horrible) because Paul Carrack sounds as Elmer Fudd , the mediocre Bossa Nova version of I Know What I like and the hard to swallow Waiting Room Only, the rest of the album (8 more tracks) is outstanding. But I was pretty surprised when he left. They kind of assumed that he would. I certainly never dreamed it would go on and on like it did. Even the sax players who sometimes only play 3 notes or a solo in songs are more impotant than drummers in bands (it is the same in Jazz, not only in Rock bands). During this time, the drummer somehow also found time to tour with Santana and the Bee Gees and maintain a solo career. I guess I had clarity of what I hoped to accomplish.
